Ó2000 San Diego Wanderers Motorcycle Club
IMPORTANT NOTE – The Location of the July 19th Club Meeting has changed!!
The club meeting
on July 19 has been moved to an alternate location – The meeting will be held at Gaetanno's which is located at 10615 Tierrasanta Blvd, Suite H … 1 mile east of I-15.
The phone number
is 565-1665
We are moving
the meeting there for several reasons:
1.
We can
continue to hold our meetings on Wednesday (in peace and quiet!)
2.
Excellent
food (all Italian menu with a large selection) at prices we can afford (less than $10.00 for most of the
items)
3.
Ample parking
4.
The area
we could use is slightly more secluded from the rest of the dining area, and is already set up in a manner we can
use...no rearranging furniture. Plus the lighting is much better.
5.
The owner
(Peter) is willing to try this on a "trial" basis to see if we like each other. Of course, his
main concern is that he needs to turn a profit on our use of his facility. This naturally would occur if the majority
of the people attending buy dinner as opposed to only a beverage of some sort. I don't see this as a problem,
but we need to mention this during our meeting discussion. Nothing comes for free!
6.
Location
is exactly 1 mile east of I-15 on Tierrasanta Blvd only a mile or two from our original meeting place, so it's
within our "central location" area
· Letter from the Prez (to his SO)…
Honey,
Goin’ out for a ride. Be back in about a month.

Observations from the Second
Chair
By Larry Sammarco - Well at the June meeting I was the first chair with our illustrious leader plying
the roads on his trusty (I hope!) steed! Ron ought to be back in 3-4 weeks. We had a good meeting with (17) seventeen
members and guests in attendance.
That's more than 50% of our membership! Pretty impressive. We had the usual reports (see newsletter), and some updates (MSF, SD Toy Run). Don is no longer pursuing
the advanced rider course due to total lack of co-operation from that organization. Thanks Don for all your efforts!
Rick reported on the Toy run, and said the date is a firm November 26, 2000! The membership then voted
to again be one of the sponsors this year. So we'll need help with
the event, as it takes club involvement to make it work, so give Rick a call and ask him what you can do to help.
In case you weren't aware of it, we have a club patch in the works, and Don presented the artists mock-up
at the meeting. And it was really nice. I think it’s going to look great on whatever you put it on for display.
We also voted to make the Steve Laszko charity ride a club-sponsored event, so once again we're going
to be asking for volunteers from our membership. You can go online to the SDMC to get more information about the
Benefit Ride:
http://www.tfb.com/sdmc/steveride.html
This is the Wanderers own charity for a fallen comrade. And if you have any questions contact Don Presten.
July looks like a "full" month of fun rides and events, so check out the calendar and join us
whenever possible.
And finally we'll be trying a new meeting place for our July 19th meeting. Gaetano's restaurant
in Tierrasanta. (Just east of the 15 on Tierrasanta blvd). It’s a nice quiet place with a back area we can use.
And no jukebox, or video games to raise the noise level. Larry

Wanderers Accept Task of Hosting
Benefit Ride
At the June club meeting, I gave
a presentation to the attendees concerning our wish (Rick and I) that the Wanderers spear head the effort to put
on a benefit ride for Steve Laszko on Sunday, September 10, 2000.
To review, Steve was severely injured in a Superbike racing accident at
Sears Point Raceway in early May. Steve’s injuries included
a broken neck and the rehabilitation cost for this type of injury is astronomical. All proceeds for this ride
go directly to the Laszko family to help offset the expenses for Steve’s rehabilitation.
The proposal was first posed to
the Wanderers Board of Directors at the June 8 meeting and it was unanimously approved that it be placed before
the membership at large on the 21st.
Rick and I gave a presentation
to the attendees indicating that if the Wanderers accepted the responsibility of spearheading this ride, it would
mean some logistical work for all members of the club.
After the presentation, a vote was taken and it again, was unanimously approved – and thus, we all now have some work to do!!!
I have set up a website strictly for the Wanderers members to use as a “home base” for the To-Do list,
flyers, information and status reports on the various projects we’ll all be working on. The address is:
http://www.tfb.com/sdmc/steveride.html
Note:
Please do not give out this address to anyone
not a member of the Wanderers or part of the organization team.
What I would like all the members to do is review the data on the website, find an item that needs to
be done and volunteer for it. Let either Rick or I know
that you would like to help. Key holes that we need to
fill include:
· We need members to help solicit door prizes
· We need members to attend MC club meetings to talk about this
ride.
· We need members to help us distribute the ride flyers.
· We need a member to make arrangements for coffee and donuts
at the ride start.
· We have more….
My only request is that you do not volunteer for something that you not have the time to complete. Of course, we’ll need everyone’s help on the day of the ride, so mark your calendars!!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email me – my home number is 619-449-4888
and my email address is dpresten@tfb.com
Let me close this by say that I am extremely proud to be a member of a club that actually “does something”
for riders – it is a true pleasure to associate with you folks and I really appreciate everything – my thanks to
all of you in advance.

Club Secretary takes a Trip
to Santa Barbara
By Bill
Edwards - Well, I took this week off, because my new boss couldn't give me the two weeks in June I had planned
in my old job. So you take what you can get. Memorial Day weekend didn't
seem like a good time to leave because I had no hotel reservations, and besides that, I didn't have any real "plan".
Just
Santa Barbara, the coast, maybe Cambria.
So after
much hemming and hawing, I finally got a late start Tuesday morning around 11AM. The "plan" at
that point was to head up I5 to the 101, and then up to Santa Barbara, spend the night, then head up to Cambria
the next day. *OR*, the "plan" was also, and equally, to head up I5 to the Tejon Pass, and just
past Gorman, take the Cuddy Valley Road exit and head for a place called Pine Mountain, then hit 166 and take that
into Santa Maria. I had "no plan", the best of all plans.
A black cat actually crossed my path as I was walking out to the garage. I ignored him. The
road in front of my house curves right and then left, two fairly blind curves. As I entered the second turn
an Asian lady in an SUV drifted into my lane. I didn't panic, just veered to the right as far as I could,
and she finally looked up from whatever she was doing and corrected. Jeez!
North of Oceanside I ran into heavy traffic, bumper to bumper stuff that kept slowing to nearly a stop, then speeding
up a little. I did some lane splitting, but it wasn't much help. I wondered if everyone had decided
to wait for the day after the Holiday to head home? I couldn't see any other reason for this amount of traffic.
Tired of it, and hungry, I stopped at the Denny's at the Ortega Hwy exit for a burger and some map study. Didn't help much, I still couldn't decide what I really wanted to do. Decided to go with the first
plan sorta, and took the Toll road on up to the 405,
where I got in the Commuter Lane and headed North, hoping to see the 101 sign soon. Well, traffic on the
405 was heavy too, though not so bad as 5 had been, and the Commuter Lane helped, but I don't enjoy 80+ speeds
for that amount of time, so when I got to HollyWierd, and the Commuter lane had ended anyways, I saw the Sunset
Blvd exit, and remembered from my "yoot" that that was a nice twisty, windy road that led down to the
PCH, so on a whim I took the Sunset exit. And what a nice little ride that turned out.
Lots of traffic coming up Sunset, but not much going down, and soon I was turning north on the Pacific Coast Highway,
Highway 1. And guess what? No traffic! I had the road to myself, I swear, until Topanga at least, and
then very light until past Malibu. Even then, most of the traffic was headed south. Ah yes, this was
more of what I had in mind. This was the California Beach Town, the place that started it all. Malibu
will never change, it is timeless, the special "Little Corner by the Sea". The weather was cool
and damp, but not cold, the sun was out, the wind was calm. Perfect.
I stopped in Trancas at probably the best Starbuck's on the Coast, and sipped an iced Vanilla double tall Latte
and watched as they filmed some sort of helicopter action adventure stuff across the road on the beach. 3
people hanging from a line off the helo, painted Marine green, and another copter following it around with a big
bulby thing on the front of it that I
guessed to be some sort of camera rig.
Back on the bike, I gassed up and headed on up Hwy 1 past Point Dume. Before you reach Oxnard,
this section is outrageously beautiful, with some great sweepers and awesome scenery. Sparkling ocean, green
hillsides, stark cliffs....yes!
After Oxnard, where I again encountered some heavy traffic, I picked up the 101 and rode on for Santa Barbara.
After Ventura the traffic was fairly light, and I enjoyed the scenery and the road.
I haven't been to Santa Barbara since I was a teenager, and knew only
that I wanted to find a hotel near the Wharf. Well, being a Wanderer, I took the wrong exit off the 101,
and had some fun trying to find my way around that town! No problem though, it ended up that I found my way
to Cabrillo Blvd, which I then rode up and down the length of twice, looking for a Hotel/Motel that appealed to
me and that had a Vacancy sign up. No problem. Checked into the Harbor View Inn, not knowing that this
was indeed a great choice, being just off of State Street, where there are tons of great eateries and pubs.
Not to mention a 24 hour espresso bar nearby, run by the city Visitor Information folks!
Ah yes. Hot shower, get settled. Covered parking for the bike? You betcha. Time for a stroll
and a cold brew. 7PM or so found me at a place called Enterprise Fish Co. sitting at the bar, having been
attracted by the sign outside that told me they had Guinness Stout on tap. The waitress, a very fine and
pretty lady named Jennifer (picture a young Glenn Close), suggested the Aki Poki appetizer, which was fantastic.
(tuna marinated in sesame served on lettuce) That, and the bartender let me switch on Speedvision after the
Laker's game. For dinner, I had shrimp and steak, served at the bar. Then a stroll. It was a
beautiful evening.
Next morning I decided that this town needed more than one evening, so I decided to forego Cambria. The hotel
folks were accommodating, and let me keep the same room for another night. Still, some more motorcycling
was in order, so I headed for Solvang, via 154 past Lake Cachuma, with a ride down the old Stagecoach road and
the Cold Spring Tavern, the local motorcyclists version of the Hideout at Lake Hinshaw. Due to some road
construction near
the bottom of 154, where the road crew only let so many vehicles pass in either direction at a time, I was able
to get the road to myself by pulling over and taking some photos and estimating the time it would take for the
next "group" to come up the road. Not bad, heh?
I had a late breakfast around 12:30 in Solvang, then rode back to Santa Barbara on the 101 south. Made lots
of scenic stops, including Goleta. It was a fine day trip.
When I got back to town it was time for a real stroll up State Street....man, if a person were fond of sidewalk
cafes, then this would be heaven! There are several in every block, and many shops of all kinds. A
brewery, a winery, Bookstores, antiques...you name it. Hey guys, if there's a lady in your life, this is
the place to take her! Later that evening, after a fine Mexican meal, I took a walk out on the Wharf and
marveled at how quiet and peaceful this town was, and how beautiful she looked back over the water. San Diego
is great, but....compared to Santa Barbara, well, there's no comparison. Clear starry sky, the town lights,
the sparkling lights of all the homes on the dark hills above the town, and only the lapping of the water under
the pier....and out on the water it is dark and calm, with only the blinking of the channel buoys and a few boats
in the distance.
This morning I had breakfast at the original Sambo's, and finally hit the road just after 10AM. Avoiding
the slab, and in no big hurry, I took the coastal scenic route all the way home, including Malibu, Manhattan Beach,
Palos Verdes, a wild hare ride over the Terminal Island bridges in Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna, etc.
Stopped
at Kafana's in Carlsbad for that designer coffee, of course,
where I met yet another fellow (that's 3) that had purchased the MM RoadStar. Traffic, except for the Venice
Beach area, was not bad. Just traffic, not what you'd call "commuter traffic".
So, I had a great time, and a fun ride. It was California Nostalgia, and it was wonderful. But I think
I'll go for a ride tomorrow, even though I came home 'cause I have some stuff to take care of! Who cares?!

John Q leads Wanderers Ride
to Viejas
Recap
by Ron Growel - Since I didn't lead this ride, somehow I got nominated to write about it. The Wanderers had
a great day today with a destination ride to Viejas Casino and Outlet Shopping Mall. John Q. Lawrence led
us through some very enjoyable back roads of San Diego at a leisurely pace starting from SR 94 to Willow Glenn
Road onto Dehesha Road to Japatul Rd into Alpine where we picked up Old Highway 80 and followed it to Viejas.
Eleven bikes started out at about 9:30 AM with Wanderers Tera Salo and Tommie Gilbertoson making their first ride
with us, Steve & (now red-headed) Toni Moyer, the long-lost but not forgotten Pete Minor, Jim Webb, Jeff Dodds
and Yvette on Jeff's beautiful new Roadstar, Rod & Rose Fleming, and myself and Lorn. We had two
guests with us, but unfortunately they left the group before I had a chance to catch their names.
Once at Viejas, we were joined by John's wife, Joan (whom we are working diligently to persuade to ride on the
back of John's Virago) and Jim Hunt with his wife Anna. I am firmly convinced that one reason we had such
a great turn-out today was John's choice of a destination. Of course the beautiful weather helped, but the
opportunity to do a little shopping, a little gambling, and a little eating (fondled eggs served up by a look-a-like
to Floe of "Mell's Diner" fame) had appeal to a great many folk (especially the ladies!) I heard
rumors that Rod won nearly $30 in a short period of time and Rose lost it even faster. Tera hit enough to
pay for her lunch, while Lorn walked out with $11 profit during the short time it took me to grab an after lunch
cigarette. And I don't recall that any of the ladies walked out without buying at least something!
Keeping with John's schedule, we departed Viejas on Old Highway 80 and headed back to Starbuck's in Rancho San
Diego via Harbyson Canyon Rd. where we passed John's Fantasy Land (Swallow's Nudist Resort....seems JQ can't pass
by here without getting a perverted thrill!), back onto Willow Glenn Rd to SR 94, then stopping at Starbuck's.
So there we all are, sitting and relaxing, and who should show up but Bill Edwards. (Starbucks, Bill
Edwards, synonymous). Seems Bill had some problems with his new Beemer and couldn't make the ride.
<Which BTW is why I'm writing this report and not Bill> But he was successful enough at makeshift repairs
to ride down to have his caffeine jolt with us. Looked like he needed it, too. Don't think he's shaved
since returning from Santa Barbara.
Having officially ended the ride, I can say the only problem with today's ride was that there were no problems.
No missed turns, no u-turns, no checking maps, no heading the wrong way on wrong way streets....nothing.
Consequently, by Presidential Decree, John is hereby temporarily suspended from leading any more rides until he
repents for breaking with Fukawi tradition. We just can't be having our reputation tarnished like that.
But, wait! It's still early in the afternoon. There's still time for some more riding, and Jim,
Tera, Rod & Rose, Lorn and myself succumbed to the call of the Tecate Taco. After gassing back
up, off we went back out Hwy 94 for a nice cruise to Tecate where we crossed the border, picked up some "supplies",
and had a few tacos. Coming back across the border, the Border Patrol Agent thought Jim looked a little familiar,
to which Jim replied "I'm on every FBI Wanted Poster in the country." Asked if he had anything
to declare, he answers "Everything!" Obviously, the Agent must have been ready to go off duty and
didn't want to work overtime processing paperwork for a lunatic, so he waved us on. One more shopping stop
to make....a few groceries at the fruit stand just before reaching Jamacha Jct., said goodbye and headed our separate
ways to home.
Just another day in Paradise. Ron

Wanderer’s get First Aid and
CPR Training
Respectfully
submitted by Pat Sammarco - there were a couple of last-minute cancellations, but we ended up with 5 Wanderers
(John Q, Larry S., Rose F., Rick M., Tera S.) and a couple of SoCal Cruisers (Grace and Dave E. & Larry S .)
certified as Red Cross Certified CPR lifesavers, with First Aid training on the side.
Tim Lewis was our Red Cross instructor. He is a friend of mine, but I did not realize until Saturday that he has
been a rider, and even spent last Sunday on the back of a friend's bike. Tim showed his training expertise and
style of friendly competence in keeping the class on track and having fun while we learned vital skills.
We
learned how to aid
choking victims, accident victims, someone
suddenly ill or injured, and unconscious victims with or without pulse and respiration. I was amazed by the information
that in spite of all the concern for HIV transmittal, that there is no evidence of a case caused by CPR.
There are methods and devices to protect both parties. The point is : don't be afraid to help someone. The class
also had a demonstration of CPR for infants.
The class included video presentations, words of wisdom from Tim, wise cracks and legitimate debates from everyone.
Students practiced on the "Annie" mannequins and there were tests of both knowledge acquired and skills
learned. Tim set up various scenarios of situations, a little different
for each person, to see how they would respond, and care for their "victims." Everyone did well on the
written and oral tests, too.
I think we will all be more confident knowing that our riding companions could help us, and save our lives in an
emergency.
Jeff Dodds arranged for loaner mannequins. THANKS, Jeff.
Rose Fleming provided us with a very appropriate room, video player and TV, and shopped for our lunch sandwiches,
veggies, chips and brownie bites. THANKS, Rose and Rod.
Tim did a terrific job as our instructor, and is willing to repeat the class if we can come up with a date. You
all remember how hard it was to agree on a date, don't you? I am willing to coordinate another class for those
who missed this one.

June 9th Packard’s Run
Recap by Gary Steinweg - What a great evening for a ride. I guess a lot of others
thought so too.
When I arrived at Highland Valley with
younger daughter Dawn on the back, there were already three bikes there. We waited around for a
couple minutes, and as we were getting ready to leave, two more bikes showed up. OK, time to go. Then two more bikes showed up, one after the other. Right after that,
two more showed up.
Let's get out of here before anyone else
shows up.
Several of the people there were new to our Friday evening ride. Most of them came from
Phil Rich's company, and it was a pleasure meeting them all. Since I have CRS (can't
remember stuff), I only remember Kathleen as she's been on the San Diego list(s) for a long time now, but I've
never met her.
Nice to put a face with a name. Phil can name the rest.
Guy showed up on his new BMW with his new friend on a beautiful BMW. Or, was it the BMW that
was new . . . never mind.
Led by Jack, the flight of ten moved across Highland Valley somewhat smartly. It wasn't a land speed
record, but it wasn't a lazy ride either. The ride conditions
were perfect.
The string of ten bikes looked pretty cool
as they crested the rises one after another after another.
As we rode into Ramona we picked up three more bikes that came up from the El Cajon area. One of the bikes actually originated in Temecula, Larry and Pat Sammarco. Pat works near downtown,
so Larry came down and picked her up on their bike. They came up with
a couple other Wanderers.
I didn't get a final count, but I think
we ended up with around 18 bikes and well around 24 people.
Then, as we're sitting around enjoying each other's company, daughter Dawn says, "isn't that Laura
(my other daughter who lives in Escondido) and her husband Mike sitting at the red light in their car?" They'd driven up to Ramona from work to check out the driving time in anticipation of looking for a house
there. What are the chances of that?
A great evening.
I left with Dawn a little before sunset,
a few others had already left, but about a third were still there. I enjoyed meeting the new
people. Hope you all show up next time too.

Dick’s Excellent Adventure
– June 18
Recap by Bill Edwards - Lead by
Dick Useted, and joined by myself, Ron Growel and Lorn, Rod & Rose Fleming, John and Fran Del Santo, John Q.
Lawrence, and guests Dennis Stealy and Tom Offill, the Wanderer's departed Chula Vista at just after 9:00AM.
We were all in for on fine ride today.
Still cloudy and cool in Chula, we encountered sunshine near Otay Lake. We did not encounter traffic however!
It was remarkable really. Like a midweek ride. All the way up Hwy 94, we had the road to ourselves,
except for opposing traffic, and Dick set a perfect pace, not too fast, and not too slow. It was warm, but
not too warm. And there is still plenty of green left in the hills down there. Beautiful scenery.
An unexpected and unannounced surprise was a pleasant detour when Dick turned left on Barrett School Road, a sort
of desert version of Engineers Road. Then it was back onto 94, just in time for some of the nice twisties
that road has to offer.
Here we did catch up to a motor home, but the driver politely pulled over to let us pass. This occurred
5 more times today, I believe. Whenever we came up behind somebody, they got out of the way. Amazing.
Or maybe Dick has a really annoying set of brights. :^)
Billed as a Brunch in Campo, we actually had breakfast in Cameron Corners at the little Cafe there. Good
food, good friendly service, and lots of good stories and laughs. We don't often see John and Fran on our
Wanderer rides, and it was a real treat to have them join us. Because of their many commitments, they often
can't join us. Ron Growel borrowed a camera, so he could get some photos, which should soon be on the Website.
Be sure and check 'em out.
After breakfast, John and Fran had to depart, and the rest of us headed east on 94 to La Posta road, and then west
on Old 80 and up over the Sunrise Hwy. The cooler air up on Mt. Laguna was welcome now, and it's still plenty
green up there. The pine scent was stronger than I remember from 4 weeks ago, the last time I was up there.
We came back down 79 and had a butt break at Lake Cuyamaca. Everyone remarked about what a great ride it
had been so far.
Then it was time to head down 79 towards Japatul Valley and Lyons Valley, and a stop to feed Black Jack the mule
some licorice, with John Q. and Ron and Lorn turning off for home on I-8. Have a great trip Ron!
Along the way a wasp somehow got himself in through the vents on my jacket...full leathers and I still get stung!
Glad it wasn't a bee though.
We made one last stop at Campo Rd and Steele Canyon for gas, and the ride was over. Good job Dick! Me, my next stop was at Kensington Coffee in Kensington...Regards, Bill E.

California Beach Boyz Route
By Jim Hunt - Today, I wanted to
try something a little different. Started out early morning and headed west (Via Rancho Parkway) to Del Dios.
The hills were still covered in morning mist, Lake Hodges kept popping into view showing placid waters with just
the hint of a morning breeze. Traffic was light. Tranquility! As I navigated the gentle sweepers into "The
Ranch" staying mostly on S-8; came across a lady parked alongside the road looking as she might need assistance
(I always stop for ladies if they even look like they need assistance). It seems she spotted a stray dog wandering
down the road and was trying to coax it to her by offering a bit of "donut holes"( Fudge Chocolate I
believe). I removed my lid, sun glasses, and walked with her a bit, but the dog just wasn't having any of it.
Finally it decided to leave the road and head across an orange grove so we decided that there wasn't anything left
to do but to abandon the quest. Not-with-standing the fact that we could have been shot for trespassing had we
pursued the canine.
Back to the ride.....Heading West
still via S-8, through Rancho Santa Fe, ended up at the beach at the Life Guard Station on Plaza just off of Highway
101. Nice little cove there, so got off the bike, strolled down to the waters and marveled at the pelicans diving
for their breakfast, the surfers trying to catch a wave as I mused...."I wonder, if I can find a way to get
a surf board on my bike?" Oh well, might have to settle for a boogie board.. Heading North along the
101 went through several nice communities ie. Leucadia, Solana Beach, and such, breezing through Carlsbad
and Oceanside through Hill street missing the turn onto the I-5 and had to do a U-Turn at Camp Pendleton's main
gate to head North on I-5. Traffic was pretty heavy for this hour of the morning and going through the checkpoint
at San Onofre was real slow. I finally got off at San Clemente back on the coast route, stopped at Starbucks
for a butt break and java. I thought about paying a visit to my daughter who lives in the area but opted
not to owing to the fact that without notice I would receive a torrent of reprimands about not calling first.
(She does not like surprises).
Back on to the interstate at Dana
Point and finding the Ortega and headed East up the twisties. They are fairly casual with the slowest radius recommended
at 20 m.p.h. ( I actually scraped the peg on that one, so now I know the lean angle of the Vulcan). Pretty light
traffic, only encountered one lonely rocket jock which I let pass me. At the OverLook, there were about fifty
bikes, mostly sport (naturally), but with a good mixture of Harleys, Metric, and a couple Euro's. The sky
was still overcast and if felt like rain. Headed down the mountain, through Elsinore, was going to stop by "The
Road House" but hardly anybody seemed to be there so I kept going down Grand all the way to Clinton Keith
where I caught the super-slab to "T-Town", went by Pachanga down the Pala-Temecula to 76. By now I felt
a few spritzes of moisture and decided I better not head up the mountains, so opted to head south via Valley
Center catching the Bear Valley to I-15 and home.
Luckily it did not rain, must have
been a little "tropical" moisture.
Next trip.....going to investigate
telescoping spinning rod set and perchance, find some mountain stream and try my luck at catching fresh lunch!
or....Boogie Board?
Cheers, Jim
· Summary of June Board of Directors Meeting
Present for the June 8th meeting were Gary Steinweg, Larry & Pat Sammarco, Don Presten,
Bill Edwards and Ron Growel.
Absent: Rick Moyer, John Q. Lawrence.
The primary topic was the club ride calendar; the calendar was set and rides noted for the next 3 months, June
through August, with the additional notations of the Steve Laszko Benefit in September and the Del Mar MC show
in October.
The Steve Laszko Benefit ride will happen, but it remains to be decided whether this will be a ride the Wanderer's
will simply participate in, or be the actual sponsor. After some discussion, it was decided by vote that
Don Presten will present this concept to the membership for a vote at the next meeting, June 21.
Ron Growel will be out of town on vacation, and the June meeting will be presided over by Vice President Larry
Sammarco.
Also approved by vote was the first draft of a new Wanderer's logo.
·
Summary of June Members Meeting
The June meeting was called to order at 7:02PM by Larry Sammarco, Vice President.
In attendance were Larry & Pat Sammarco, Don & Bobbie Presten, Gary Steinweg, Bill Edwards, Rod & Rose
Fleming, PA Davis, Tera & Robert Salo, Steve & Toni Moyer, Rick and Linda Moyer, and Dick Usted.
Officers absent were President Ron Growel and John Q. Lawrence.
Reading of May minutes: Waived, accepted as published in Newsletter.
The minutes of the May officers meeting were then read.
Gary Steinweg gave the treasury report; current balance $539.25. He reported that based on known expenditures,
the balance at the end of the
current fiscal year will be $362.25.
Old business discussed included the MSF advanced rider course: with no progress seemingly possible, Don Presten
advised us he is giving this up.
Rick Moyer gave a short talk on the Toy Run, advising that this year it will definitely be a poker run style ride
on November 26, and that the sponsorship has been firmed up. The SoCal Cruisers will also participate as
sponsors.
Don Presten presented the membership with the nearly final design of our new multi-purpose club patch. This
was accepted by vote.
Copies of the club By-Laws were passed out. Rick Moyer will propose
an amendment to the amendment at the July meeting, advising that there could be potential problems with the concept
of a simple majority of members present at any given meeting making a change to the charter.
A new meeting location will be tried out in July, as discussed by Larry Sammarco. The location will be Gaetano's
in Tierrasanta.
New business was discussed next, with the primary subject being the Steve Laszko Benefit ride in September.
Rick Moyer and Don Presten have
accomplished lots of work on this already. Don gave a talk on what the expectations and needs would be should
the club decide to sponsor this ride. This concept was passed by vote, and Don will be emailing an options/need
to do list to all members.
The Ride calendar was updated.
The meeting adjourned at 7:51PM.

Note from our Webmaster
Ride to eat, eat to ride? Well, not ALL the time! Check out the Wanderer’s
past rides button for proof positive that we occasionally throw some shopping and gaming into the mix as well! Three “organized” (I use the term loosely) rides/events were scheduled for June and their recaps posted
on the club site.
They include, our Red Cross/CPR certification
day, the Viejas Shoppers/Gamblers ride (several riders left the casino with part of a bike payment that day) and
the long very enjoyable Campo brunch ride which included a couple of guests.
Several new members have photos and,
in the case of Tera Salo, bio’s posted this month under
“Wanderer’s Members”. Quite a few future rides have been added well into September but be sure to check that page often for
last minute additions and updates.
A link has also been added to Don
Presten’s SDMC site for updates on the Steve Laszko benefit ride being sponsored by the Wanderers.
The Guestbook is filling up but you’ll
see at least one suspect entry. It’s from a couple claiming
to ride a Schwin with the last name of Growel. Oh well, two wheels is two
wheels.
Finally, check out these numbers.

Website visits are reported by FastCounter
on a weekly basis.
I’m not sure what we did on the week of
May 15-21 but we should certainly do it again! Total visits as of this
writing are approaching the 16 hundred mark since March.

Every other Thursday - Hot Rod
Nights in La Mesa.
It's a Wanderers' traditional bi-weekly
event. During the summer months, the Wanderers get together every other Thursday evening in La Mesa to enjoy
the ritualistic Hot Rod Night in La Mesa. For those of you unfamiliar with this event, it is an opportunity
to view anything from restored, classic automobiles from the golden, olden days up to present day customized jobs
as they cruise up and down La Mesa Blvd. This is not a planned or organized event, and you're likely to see
most anything there.
The Wanderers typically meet at the Por Favor Cantina, 8302 La Mesa Blvd. at the corner of Palm street in La Mesa. Enjoy supper and/or a Margarita or beer and watch antiques, muscle cars, hot rods, and anything else imaginable cruise by while you eat. Or just come to stand and watch and walk up and down the street to gawk and marvel at what man can do to machine.. In either case, we treat this very informally, no ride captain, no time of arrival or departure, no RSVP's. Just show up anytime after 6:00PM and see who else is there.
