San Diego/ Wanderers
Motorcycle Club
The San Diego Wanderers motorcycle club was created in 1997 to organize local Yamaha Virago owners into a cohesive
group of individuals interested in group rides around the Southern California area. The club continues to grow
and develop.
The garage now includes Virago's along with an ever increasing number of Yamaha Road Stars and Ventures. Kawasaki's
Vulcan is represented as are BMW, Honda, Suzuki and Harley Davidson. Motorcycles of all breeds are welcome.

For the summer, club meetings are being held the fourth Saturday of the month, 10 am at the Country Choice Restaurant.
It is located at 8910 Troy St. in Spring Valley, near Bancroft.
Country Choice has plenty of parking, takes plastic, the food is good and plentiful.
The restaurant is very close to several major freeways (the 8, 125 and 94).
To reach the Country Choice simply take 94 East to the Bancroft exit. Turn right (south) and continue until Bancroft
turns into Troy. The restaurant is around a right hand bend in the road.
The meeting will be followed by a ride, the route to be announced during the meeting.
The Ride Schedule
Saturday, September 1st
3rd Annual Desert in the Moonlight Ride Ron Growel is leading this adventure. We'll depart from Packards in Ramona
at about 7:45 PM. to allow the moon time to gain a little altitude. . It won't be a Harvest Moon ride, but still
should be pretty spectacular. The route will be as last year.Ramona to Santa Ysabel past Lake Henshaw, down the
glass elevator to Borrego Springs, up Banner Grade to Julian, returning to Ramona. It is suggested you dress in
layers as we'll be going from about 4000 feet altitude down to the desert floor then back up to 5000+ in Julian.
The temperature could vary quite a lot. We will make a stop in Borrego Springs for a quick bite to eat. Please
try to arrive a little early at Packards so we can get a head count and have time for a brief safety orientation.

Rod Fleming's Surprise Ride: Departure time and place TBA
Saturday, September 29th
Welcome Back Tera Ride: Tera Salo has been out of town, out of the state, out of the U.S. of A for several months.
Okinawa actually serving the U.S. Navy in some mysterious function involving diving. We're afraid to ask. This
ride will begin in Tera's driveway which is in Ramona. Check back for details.
Saturday, October 20th
Ride To Idyllwild: Mike Calderone claims we can get to Idyllwild without touching wheel on a freeway. We'll give
him a chance to prove it and will hopefully be joined by the So Cal Cruisers when we reach Temecula. Check back
for ride details.
Sunday, November 4th
Ron Growels First Ever (this is an experiment) Scavenger Hunt Ride. Lists of items will be provided by Ron for
riders to find ranging from "three masted sailing ships" to "hungry black mules" Depending
on how the Ride Captain sets this up, we could simply travel as one group to discover all the items on the list
or if the turnout is large break into separate groups. Please check back for details.
Sunday, November 25th
21st Annual St. Vincent De Paul Toy Run: This is the clubs annual charitable event which, in years past, has involved
nearly every member of the organization at the ride beginning or ride end. Last year we (and other sponsors) drew
in excess of 700 motorcycles and 1000 riders each of whom donated an unwrapped toy for the children at St. Vincent
De Paul shelter in San Diego.
The Wanderers are charged with traffic control and as most are aware, directing motorcycle riders is akin to herding
cats. Please contact overall project coordinator Ron Growel to see how you can help ( rgrowel@home.com ) or:
Location:
Ride Start: Don Presten (traffic control duties)
Registration:
Bobbie Presten (collect money $$$ and try to keep your cool)
Ride End:
Tera Salo (signage and traffic control)
Club Booth:
Pat Sammarco (booth setup and hosting in Ramona)
Many who've volunteered to work one end or the other in the past have actually put in an appearance at both, helping
wherever possible. Even if you can't devote the entire day to this event please consider giving it a few hours
and an unwrapped toy.
Saturday, December 8th
Joint Holiday Party with So Cal Cruisers & Ride to Long Beach MC Show: Details TBA
A few words from Ron
Hi, Wanderers!!!!
The 21st Annual San Diego Toy Run (co-sponsored by the Wanderers) is rapidly approaching...only 3 more months...and
plans are progressing nicely. The much coveted t-shirts
and pins are in the design stage and we are currently taking pre-orders from the sponsoring
organizations. As many of you know from previous experience, these sell out fast on the day of the ride, and
if you happen to be busy with parking motorcycles or registration, you may not even have the chance to purchase
one on that day, so I strongly suggest a pre-order.
Attached is the order form which can be submitted at our next club meeting on Saturday, Aug. 25. If you cannot
open this attachment, have no worries, 'cause I'll bring extras to the meeting.
Please bring either cash or checks made payable to A.B.A.T.E. Local 6. The price for t-shirts is $10.00 each.
Pins are $5.00 each. If you would like to have your name individually printed on the back of the shirt as a paying
sponsor, the cost is an additional $15.00
If you cannot attend Saturday's meeting, send the form and a check to me at
Ron Growel
6268 Potomac Street
San Diego, Ca., 92139
I will deliver the money and forms to the SD Toy Run Committee, then pick up and distribute the shirts and pins
on the day of the ride.
C-ya Saturday.
Ron Growel
