WANDERERS GENERAL MEETING
JUNE 22, 2002
Country Choice Restaurant
ATTENDING: Mike Calderone; Rod & Rose Fleming; Bill & Debbie Ball; Dick “Grumpy” Useted; Jim &
Evelyn Hotz; Kevin & De Gayken; Joe Baker; Greg (and Gregory) Huber; Al Sessler; Thomas “Doc” & Bonnie
Cassidy; Gary Steinweg; Barry Borden; John Q. “Gadget” Lawrence; P.A. Davis; Mike & Darlene MacDonnell; Rebecca
Hall (New Member---Welcome!) & guest, Jesse Pagliaro; “Bronco” Bill Edwards; Ron “Taz” Growel; Scott Helstrom;
Kent Saxon.
Meeting called to order by Rod Fleming at precisely 10:00 AM.
Kent Saxon was given the floor to address Grumpy’s solo ride to Michigan and back. After much hilarity, it was
generally acknowledged that Grumpy has earned recognition for this journey, and Kent presented him with a tee shirt.
It reads, Iron Butt Grumpy (get it?).
(Back to Business)
MINUTES: It was moved and seconded that the minutes be approved as posted to the web site. Motion carried.
In light of it being a large gathering this time, with several fairly new people, everyone then introduced themselves.
(It was decided that Gary would not have to undergo a Pop Quiz on this.)
TREASURER’S REPORT: Gary reported that $355.00 has been deducted to pay for the small patches that were
ordered, leaving a balance of $825.21 in our treasury.
PATCHES & PINS: John Q. reported that we have ordered 100 small patches and that they should be here
in about two weeks. These patches will be available to the membership at $5.00 each. We are totally out of large
patches, and it was suggested that we hold off on ordering any more until there is a larger demand for them. We
could then go on a pre-pay basis for the order. We also need to order more silver pins, once the demand for them
has been determined. More about this later.
OLD BUSINESS: None
NEW BUSINESS: It was suggested that a new position be created, called the Wanderers Safety Officer. It would
be that person’s duty to address any safety issues which may arise as a result of our riding as a group. He could
do this in any forum he might deem appropriate and/or fun. John Q. proposed that Kent Saxon be named as this officer,
and Kent graciously agreed. Bill Edwards seconded, and Kent was duly elected. It will be Veerrrry Interrrrresssting,
to see what he comes up with. One item that was introduced was splitting rides into two groups (or more) if we
had a large turnout, for safety reasons.
Grumpy suggested that at each gathering of the Wanderers, a helmet be passed around for voluntary contributions
towards the Toy Run. Everyone thought this to be a grand idea. (We collected $51.00-----thank you, guys & gals)
Mike MacDonnell volunteered to organize a once-a-month gathering to socialize, watch stupid biker movies, and generally
have a good time. Giovanni’s in Clairemont would be the location selected, and Mike will follow up with the arrangements.
Movie Night would not take place until this fall, after the La Mesa Car Show is over.
RIDES:
Mike Calderone is planning a weekend trip to Palm Springs on October 11, 12 & 13. Wanderers are invited to
attend with him, either in one group staying for the whole weekend, or in two groups, the other group doing an
“up-and-back-the same day”. Either way, the mileage is the same. Since, that weekend will be a large gathering
of 25,000 motorcyclists, lots of vendors, BBQs, and fun, reservations need to be made early for those staying over.
Mike will keep everyone posted on the site as to motels, etc. He is planning to go to Palm Springs via the back
route, which promises to be great.
Bill Edwards relayed an invitation from the So Cal Cruisers to join them at their Pig Roast Picnic on August 17.
Since we have a club picnic scheduled for sometime in August, it was decided to combine the two events into one.
Location and details will be announced on the site.
Mike Calderone and Kent Saxon are putting a ride together to Angel’s Crest & Idyllwild on August 3. Since we
already have a ride to Pechanga scheduled, it was suggested that the two rides be combined. Details to be announced.
John Q. mapped out a ride he dubbed as the Sunday Sundae Ride, but was persuaded that due to the nature of the
Wanderers, the name be changed to the Saturday Sundae Ride. Said ride is to be held on SATURDAY, August 10. (See
the website.)
Bill Edwards reiterated Kat’s request that we ride through Mexico. Since Kat was busy this morning getting “loud
and obnoxious” (HER words, not mine), it was decided to postpone a scheduling decision. Just keep it in mind.
Barry Borden moved that we adjourn; PA seconded, and the meeting was over by 10:33. (Must be some sort of a record!)
