WANDERERS GENERAL MEETING
June 28th, 2003
Country Choice Restaurant
Club Secretary Rose Fleming Reports
ATTENDING: Rod & Rose Fleming; Leon Smeiska; Tom Warren; Melinda & Steve Mitchell; John Q. Lawrence; Thomas
& Bonnie Cassidy; Joe Baker; Carole Helstrom and guest Kevin Atherton; Kent Saxton; Quintin Bradley; Jeremiah
Culp; Lucas Dabney; Greg & Gregory Huber; Fabian Gil; Michael Wheeley; Sean Brooks.
Rod Fleming called meeting to order at 9:00 AM.
MINUTES: Thomas Cassidy motioned that the minutes be accepted as posted, Carole Helstrom seconded. All agreed.
TREASURERS REPORT: The previous balance in the treasury was $1158.10, to which was added $64.00, making a grand
total of $1222.10. We spent $630.47 on large patches, so the treasury now holds $591.63. Those who have not submitted
receipts for expenses incurred for the campout or the picnic are encouraged to do so.
PATCHES: John Q. ordered 25 large patches from Piper’s, and they should arrive around the 5th of July or so.
These patches will be fully embroidered like the first set, and Piper’s is guaranteeing the price for the next
two years. Because there was an increase in price from the last time the patches were ordered, we will be selling
these at $30.00 each. Those who have pre-ordered may either send the money to Gary or to Rose. John Q. will mail
any patches that are pre-paid. Carole Helstrom has a list of pre-orders.
PICNIC: A round of applause for Joe Baker’s dedication to our club picnic---he arrived at the park at 6 AM to
save tables for us. Thanks to all of those who worked so hard on this year’s event, especially Greg & Seanna,
Melinda & Steve, Debbie Ball, and Carole Helstrom. The Club received compliments from the Park people not
only on our behavior (good, as always) but also on our cleanup afterwards. Great job!
CHRISTMAS IN JULY: July 12th is fast approaching for this San Diego Wanderers event, which we expect to take approximately
one hour. ALL SAN DIEGO WANDERERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE. If everyone in our club shows up, that’s better
than 80 people right there! Everyone is reminded that the starting point is McDonald’s on Clairemont Mesa Blvd.
across from the Courthouse, and the ending will be at the entrance to Children’s Hospital. Check the website for
details and for the list of recommended toys, books, games etc.

SAFETY FIRST: Kent’s safety topic was about “space”…group spacing, safety spacing from other vehicles, and giving
merging vehicles space. He reminded us that the “2 second” spacing rule governed the lapsing time between riders
when riding in a staggered formation, and becomes the “4 second rule” when riding single file. This allows time
for braking, seeing and avoiding cars parked on the side of the road, and all kinds of other hazards that can arise
and need time to be identified and dealt with. In the case of cars merging onto the freeway, courtesy and common
sense dictates that riders allow that vehicle space to merge into and right back out of the line of motorcycles.
He also reminded us that riding in another vehicle’s blind spot is very dangerous. In connection with that, Carole
Helstrom pointed out that when following a trike, the “formation” process should start over, with the rider behind
the trike taking the outside position (left side of the lane). That puts the rider in the trike’s left mirror,
and makes him visible.
Meeting adjourned at 9:25, by agreement of all present.
Respectfully Submitted,
Rose Fleming
Secretary
