She brought along fliers describing the event, and John Q. will also post a link on the web site. Members were
encouraged to sponsor her. Carole Helstrom brought her new helmet with a fantastic wolf depicted on it. If anyone
is interested, a link to the artist will be posted on the web site, or you may contact Carole for further information.
Steve asked if there was a class available for those of us who are unsure of the correct procedure for posting
pictures. Greg Huber has offered his services. Anyone having general problems posting to the List, should contact
Michael Wheeley. directly.
RIDES:
Afternoon Delight Ride October 11
(We need a volunteer to lead, as John Q. will be unavailable.)
Palm Springs Bikefest October 17, 18 & 19
(Joe Durham will be leading a group for those who want to go on Saturday morning)
GUEST SPEAKER: Amy Holland gave a very good talk about safety. She also referred us to a regular article in her
magazine "Friction Zone", called "On The Scene", written by a CHP officer. Amy covered three
very important areas pertaining to safety.
1. Practice is the key to good skills and judgment. Practice your head turns. If you look at where it is you
want to go, the bike will follow. Practice your stopping. Look for distances traveled, weather conditions,
and how your bike responds to emergency stops. The more you practice, the more you will be prepared for the unexpected.
Pay attention to your body. Be sure you keep well hydrated, and remember that any type of caffeine, whether it's
tea, coffee, or colas, will contribute to dehydration.
2. Maintain your bike. Check your tires for wear, inflation, etc. Check your lights and turn signals.
Do your tune-ups regularly. A properly maintained bike is essential to safe riding.
3. Wear protective gear at all times. This includes, a properly fitted helmet, and specially designed long
sleeved jackets, pants and gloves. She reminded us that every inch of exposed skin is particularly vulnerable
to abrasion during an accident. She also assured us that, from her own experience, suffering road rash is definitely
no fun...either during an accident, or after.
A brief Q&A followed. Bravo, Amy!
COMMENTS: Rick Moyer, the founder of the Wanderers, was in attendance, and wanted to thank everyone for their
thoughts and prayers during the illness and passing of his brother Steve. Steve was also a founder of our club,
and he will be greatly missed by all who had the opportunity to get to know him. It was great to see you, Rick.
Don't be a stranger!
NEWEST "WANDERER": Jeremiah and Amber introduced us to the newest Culp, Mackenzie. (As a personal observation,
she's much prettier than most of our other members, myself included.) Congratulations!
Greg moved for adjournment; Steve seconded. Meeting adjourned at 10:49.
RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED,
Rose Fleming
