July 24, 2004
Country Choice Restaurant

ATTENDING: Rod & Rose Fleming and Jay; Greg Huber and Gregory; Steve & Melinda Mitchell; John Q. Lawrence; Carole Helstrom; Scott Helstrom; Sean Brooks; Gary Steinweg; Paul & Sharie Barban (new members); Skip & Cheryl Wilson; Bill & Sparrow Daenitz; Jeremiah Culp; Joe Pitz & Linna Wang.

Guests: Etta MacQueary & Russ Greene.

Greg Huber called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.

MINUTES: John Q. motioned that the minutes be accepted as posted; Sparrow seconded, and the minutes were approved.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Gary reported that we currently have $959.66 in our treasury. John Q. motioned that the report be accepted; Carole seconded and the report was approved as read. Carole will put in for reimbursement for the plaque that was sent to C’s Deli.

OLD BUSINESS: Joe Pitz reported that the Mount Laguna Lodge has been reserved for August 14th through the 15th. Checkout time is 1:00 p.m. Reservations are for 20 people at $240.00, and $12 each for each member above the initial 20. John Q. motioned that the club treasury pay for half the expenses, with the balance being split among the attendees. Payment must accompany the paperwork in advance. Carole seconded the motion, and voting was unanimous in favor.

The Sea-to-Summit ride will be postponed until August 21st. Details will be posted to the web site.

Carole reported on the Wanderers Christmas Party plans. The committee has chosen December 4. Social Hour at 6:00 p.m., with dinner following at 7:00. Scott and Kevin will cater it, and there will be a gift exchange after dinner. The committee is still looking at locations. Members will be required to RSVP, so we can get an accurate count for food. Details will be posted, as well as a flier announcing the final plans, and the menu. The invitation to attend, will also be extended to the SoCal Cruisers.

NEW BUSINESS: It was proposed that next year we focus on older groups who would benefit from our charity drive. Children’s Hospital is covered by a significant number of other groups. Therefore, next year’s Christmas in July benefit will be for Senior citizens…perhaps a group home. Steve Mitchell volunteered to chair the committee for 2005. Gray mentioned a facility in Saber Springs, and will look into what they would feel appropriate for and needed by their residents. We still have “Cool Scarves” from this year’s benefit. They are available at $5.00 each, with the proceeds going to 2005 Christmas in July. See Carole.

The new Wanderers Member Booklet (suggested and designed by John Q.) has been printed and will be available soon.

SAFETY FIRST:

Safety Tip #1: When in traffic, avoid using lower gear to slow your bike— use your brakes. Doc told a story about how he moved over into the carpool lane and had to slow down suddenly. Instead of applying his brakes, he down-shifted. Big mistake! Because he didn’t brake, his lights didn’t flash, letting the person behind him know that he was slowing abruptly. Fortunately, the person behind him was the ever-alert Carole (on her trike) who saw what was happening, and was able to keep from running over Doc’s bike.

Safety Tip#2: (This one from Greg) Lane-splitting is never a good idea if traffic is traveling at normal speeds, but if it is slowed, or has become a bumper to bumper parking lot, and you can do so safely, then try to restrict yourself to the space between lane #1 and #2. The shoulder outside of lane #1, provides a cushion of space.

NEW RIDES:

The following are FYI only. They are not intended to be official Club Rides at this time.

John Q. motioned that we adjourn; Doc seconded. Meeting adjourned at 10:41.

Rose Fleming
