Greg Huber called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.

New member, Nancy Nemecek was introduced.

Minutes: Rod motioned that the minutes from June be accepted as posted to the web site; John Q. seconded. Minutes were approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Gary Steinweg gave the treasurer’s report. We now have $1290.66 available.

Old Business: Our benefit for Children’s Hospital, called “Christmas in July”, is proceeding satisfactorily. Assembly will be at McDonald’s, east of Denny’s on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Departure will be at 10:00, with a short ride to Children’s, where we will hand over the toys and donations that have been collected. Details are posted through a link on the web site. Members are strongly encouraged to give an hour or so to help support this event. Leroy Eichorn has offered to provide pastries etc., but he will check with Melinda as to whether these will be needed. Children’s Hospital won’t allow food items to be donated, but perhaps we will provide them at the starting point. Melinda will get back to him about this. Thus far, Wanderers have donated $343.00 toward our Christmas in July charity.

New Business:

(1) Other organizations charity events

Greg has been talking to the various clubs in this area about coordinating their schedules, so that their events don’t coincide or conflict with each other. His suggestion has been well-received. He suggested that members check the SDMC web site, as this would be the best place to coordinate.

(2) Combining Children’s Hospital charity event with Southern Cruisers.

Most felt that this would not be a good thing to do. The general consensus was that the membership would prefer to continue supporting the Southern Cruiser’s event, as we have done in the past, but not to combine the two.

(3) Christmas in---?

It was suggested that we move our event to another month, but it was pointed out that one of the main reasons we decided on July, was because that was a half-way point in the year. Many of the toys ands so forth that were collected later in the year are already gone by July. Steve Mitchell volunteered to chair the committee for next year’s event. Carole, Debra and Diane volunteered to be on the committee. Members who wish to help with next year’s Christmas in July, are urged to contact Steve after this year’s charity run is over.

(4) Christmas Party

For several years, the San Diego Wanderers have been invited to attend the SoCal Cruisers annual Christmas party in Long Beach. It was generally thought that it is time we reciprocate by holding a party here in San Diego and inviting our sister club to attend. Rose volunteered the use of the recreation hall located in the Mobile Home Park she manages. Debra also offered space at her condominium complex. Both places will be looked at and assessed for parking availability. The event will be catered.

John Del Santo motioned that this plan be approved; Carole seconded. The motion carried. John Q. motioned that the expenses for this party be deducted from the club treasury; Steve seconded. The motion carried.

(5) Mount Laguna Lodge

There will be a Wanderers Weekend on August 21 through the 22. Joe Pitz will reserve the Lodge and grounds for our exclusive use. Details will be posted on the web site. The fee for the weekend will be $120.00. Joe Pitz motioned that this be paid for from the treasury; John Q. seconded. The motion carried.

(6) Subjects to focus on

Carole suggested that, in order to improve our riding skills, a topic be selected by the ride leader prior to a ride. For example, perhaps he or she could make an announcement at the start, “we will be focusing on riding on the high side of a curve on this ride” (or something similar). Members would then keep this in mind, practicing as they ride. The goal would be to increase our riding skills as a group.

(7) Ride Captains

It was agreed that there is a need for more people to volunteer to lead rides. The rides don’t have to be long, or complicated, necessarily, but there is an urgent need for others to step forward and take the burden off of those who continually lead (or ride sweep), so they can simply enjoy the scenery. Anyone who would like to set up arrangements to lead, may contact those who are experienced, and get tips and pointers. Many times, a leader will pre-ride his planned route, so as to get an idea of where the gas stations are, total mileage, and so forth. Again, one of those who are regularly leading may be happy to join you.

(8) Announcement

Grumpy (Dick Useted---formerly a Wanderer) had an accident last night when a car swerved in front of him and slammed on the brakes. He’s okay, but his bike was severely damaged, and his helmet was destroyed. He was going to the store down the street, but decided to wear his jacket, gloves, jeans, and boots in addition to the mandatory helmet. Grumpy didn’t have his cell phone with him at the time, and couldn’t remember anyone’s phone number. Wanderers were encouraged to jot other members phone numbers down on a small card and tuck it in their wallet, instead of relying on memory or on cell phone address books.

Doc will also post email sites to use (www.e-mailanywhere.com for instance) which will allow members to receive and send email while on the road. (This problem arose when Rod and Rose were in Colorado and needed to contact members back home.)

(9) C’s Deli

Our first “Golden Fork Award” will be sent to C’s Deli in Pagosa Springs for their outstanding service and assistance to Rod and Rose during the emergency with Mike Calderone. John Q suggested that they receive one of our large patches and an Honorary Membership in the San Diego Wanderers. Carole is taking up a collection to send to them, asking for a “take-out” order (which cannot be delivered) and requesting that they use the money however they see fit. Rose will write an accompanying letter. Doc motioned that the cost of the patch be bourn by the treasury; Rod seconded. The motion carried.

(10) Dehydration

Another copy of the article concerning dehydration and its complications (which was distributed last month) was given out. Tina Brooks pointed out that sometimes just drinking water isn’t enough, and that it would be a good idea to also drink Gatorade, or something similar, to replace vital minerals and salts which can be lost in extreme temperatures.

(11) Safety First

Joe Pitz was appointed to fill in for Kent, our Safety Officer, during Kent’s absence.
