NEW BUSINESS: nothing to discuss
SAFETY FIRST: Paula, club safety officer, had things to share. She acknowledged Russ’ and Tom’s ERC participation. There is another class on Feb 4,07.
Let’s discuss tires! Paula cautions us to not let the tired get down to their lower limit in tread, pointing out that the cost of new tires is cheaper than the alternative costs that result from an accident. What should you be sure NOT to do if you have a blowout? Don’t’ slam on the brakes! Touch brake lightly, stay on the throttle, don’t let it stop..shift down to second or first gear and get off the road as soon as possible. Use the brake on the good tire..brake on bad tire will flip you! Feather the brake until you’re off the road.
The DMV and CHP are talking…looking to get rid of the motorcycle road test at the DMV. The written test remains there.
Rod Fleming picked up the safety discussion time with a focus on ride protocol. When lining up for a group ride, if you want to be next to a person, or in a specific place, take that spot in the lot before the ride leaves and remain there until a stop. Do NOT change your place in the line while traveling on the road. If unhappy, seek to change your spot at the first stop. Carole pointed out that it would be common courtesy to check with the person who is in the slot you wish to move to before doing so.
Rod also emphasized the value of using your ears as well as your eyes. Some of us use gears to slow down, so rider behind might not see brake lights. Listen for downshift and slowing down of engines in front of you. Riders downshifting to slow down could flick their brake lights too.
At night, if you been split up/off.."call" if you can about getting back in line (radios, high-low beams, etc.)
