SAFETY FIRST:

Ken distributed a safety article to re-read. One area of focus addressed the issue of riders get relaxed on their rides, and possibly becoming “lazy.”  He told of finding out his tire pressure gauge being 10 pounds off, and recommended checking what we are using. Tires, when just sitting can lose ˝ pound of air.  Gary told of a low tire giving him his worst scare while riding.  Being slightly over with air is definitely better than being too low. Todd continued the discussion with a question on new tires, just “sitting” looking like they’re getting worn while being stored. Letting some air out was recommended for these tires in “storage.”

Russ asked for the source of a handout on hand signals that Ken had given out at another meeting. Rod told that there was one on the AMA site, and one from the Southern Cruisers.

THIS AND THAT:

A lengthy discussion was held focusing on headsets, and communication devices. What follows is info from owners of different equipment.

1.      Russ – stereo headset with boom mike. Midland GMRS – got two for $14 - $10 rebate. He uses headsets from Kline Electronics, with a push to talk switch, that cost $130 per headset.  The push to talk button was mounted on the handlebars. They are ONLY for communication between bikes, can’t add ipod, cellphones, etc.JM Audio has an adaptor to facilitate these additions…check online. Rod pointed out that Sierra Electronics is about 15% cheaper than JM Audio, but all agreed that the money should be spent on good headsets…the radios are all the same, Kline Electronics is in Escondido (trade name is Rocket….?) and you should take your radio with you and they will match your plug connector.

FYI – Channel 8 is 2 on Chatterbox. Channel 1 is channel 1.

2.      Mike – Midland Electric sells radios, headsets, 2 speakers, and mike also with a push to talk button that can go on handlebars—or voice activated. He got his adaptor at Radio Shack..to allow ipod plug-in.  Whole system ran about $100. He got his headsets from Amazon.  Battery operated, you can get a drop in charger as well.

3.      Jon – uses a Bluetooth with an open mike.- battery lasts about 4-5 hours. He uses the BLUEANT system with is good to connect with all Bluetooth accessories. Jon recommends the purchase of lower distance models (don’t need 5 mile range) to use less battery power.  Bluetooth systems are usually a mono system.

Systems were shown, and can be checked out before after meeting ride begins.

Meeting was adjourned at 10:42. So moved by Carole, seconded by Russ.

Respectfully Submitted,

Carole Helstrom
