Wanderers Newsletter Editor: Pat SammarcoÓ2001San Diego/ Wanderers Motorcycle Club |
I sure would like your help in defining the current Newsletter and your views of what it should
be. On paper it was somehow easier… I just thought of it as a Newsletter that would be in your hands… now it has
become an element of the website, one more section for you to choose, along side a lot of information about the
club, schedules, rides and good stuff. I am really unsure of what it should be giving you. At the meeting when
we decided to go this paperless route, having meeting minutes and treasurers reports was agreed upon, and some
of you have sent articles and reports specifically for the Newsletter… this is great! There was mention of Birthday
announcements but I have yet to get names and dates to celebrate. I will appreciate ideas you have to make the
Newsletter what you want it to be. Thanks
for your help.
Pat
We do have a set of rules and are a "Family-Oriented" club. Yes, we have a varied
membership and our tastes are diverse but the one common thread is, we love riding. When I do something not in
keeping with the spirit of the club I do not wear club patches. I encourage every one to read all the info on the
website. Looking forward to mingling with all of you soon.

Past Rides
There was a lot of smiling going on in the parking lot of the former Santee K-mart this afternoon.
For a first effort this went pretty well. A
dozen motorcyclists turned out to swing their way through orange cones set in various challenging formations and
do figure 8's around planters. All the cones were knocked over at least once and several seem to have a tire tread marking
on them.
Clutch hands
got a good workout and after a couple of hours everyone said "ok, that's all for now."
Going home the bike seemed a little lighter somehow, went around corners a little smoother. Maybe there's something to this
"practice" thing huh?
Next time we'll bring more cones and set up separate (more challenging?) courses for the smaller
bikes to enjoy. Suggestions
are certainly welcome.
I hope those who managed to set aside work, moving and other chores had some fun and found
it worthwhile today. We'll
definitely have to do it again.
Cheers

A ride recap is
now posted for the Starks Indian MC Museum
ride (along with photos) at

JQ, Joe Baker, Mike C, Kent, Rod and Joe Durham met me at Dennys. We
visited Dennys for coffee & hot cocoa. Great
waitress. Left
with the group about 8:30. I-15 to Rainbow Café where we all had breakfast before they sent me off with
the instruction to have fun and ride safe. I
still think it was a “Get Rid of Grumpy Ride”. (just kidding) Arrived at Leslie’s 11:00. 123
Miles
Rialto to Parawan, Utah. 417 miles. Fuel
consumption sucks @ 85 MPH. First (and
only) close call.. Pickup
in the lane to
my right decided to be a good guy and change lanes to let merging car in. Horn got his attention. Gas in Mojave 2.50 per gal. Ouch.
Gas in Las Vegas about the same as San Diego. After
L.V. skirted rain storm most of the day. Got
a little rain in Utah but not enough to get wet. Having
trouble getting more than 4.5 hours sleep. Today’s
417 miles puts me ahead of target.
Parawan, Utah to Frisco Colorado. Left
6:00 after another shitty nights sleep. Very
cold until the sun came up. WX
forecast was for sunny day, it was. Making
good time. Climbing into the Rockies I could see rain storms behind me and felt I was out running them. Wrong. Got
to Vail, Co. and the storm caught me. COLD
and wet.
About then
discovered that when I removed cold weather gear in the morning, I had laid my heavy gloves on the T-Bag and rode
off.
I now had
only one heavy glove, the left one. Cruised
down the road with left hand doing the steering and the right with my summer glove tucked inside my jacket. Thank you throttle lock. Holed up in a motel in Frisco,
Co.
Tomorrow’s
forecast looking good. Bike
sure is a mess. Today’s
miles 497.
Frisco, CO to 27 miles east of Lincoln, Neb. Underway
@ 7:30.
WX clear
and very cold (34 degrees). As
I dropped elevation & with sunshine, it got warmer. Uneventful day. Cruised
mostly @ 75. Came
to rest 12 hours after start @ Mahoney State Park. 596 miles today.
Nebraska to Joliet, Ill. 496 miles. Story
of today’s ride: “They Call the Wind Iowa”. Tomorrow
should be in Warren, MI
As JQ sez, “The Eagle Has Landed”. Lots
of memories cruising around Detroit. Things
have really changed since 1952 when I left there to join the Navy. Winters really tear up the streets.
Very rough
riding in the city. There
ain’t nothing like San Diego. Anxious
to start back.
Left rainy Detroit wearing rain gear. Light
rain until I got to Jackson, MI and then sunny rest of the day. Longest
day ever. 685 miles, Detroit to Adrian, Iowa. Met
a guy in the motel parking lot wearing a leather vest with ride pins on it. Turns
out his Harley was in the back of a pickup but I guess he wanted to world to know that he was a biker. He told me that parts of I-70
was closed because of fires in Colorado. Might
have to go to Salt Lake City instead of Denver.
690 miles. Adrian, IA back to Frisco, Co. When
I reached the point where I had to decide on Salt Lake or Denver I called Colorado State Police, no closures so
it was Denver. WX was great. Coming
into Denver I could see a BIG storm to the west over the Rockies. I
thought, here we go again. Luckily
it stayed north of my route. Just
before I reached Frisco, I got just enough large raindrops to really mess up the windscreen. Stopped in Frisco again at the
same motel, same room. Over
half way home.
Frisco, Co. to St. George, UT. 566
miles.
WX leaving
Frisco was close to freezing. Chaps,
sweatshirt under leather jacket, head gator, the works. Later
took it all off. Denim jacket until the “Gates of Hell” otherwise know as St. George. 103 at 3 PM. No way was I going to make it
through the Mojave during the day so got a motel room and slept from 4 until midnight.
St. George to Gods Country. Night
riding across the desert was not too bad. Rolled
into Rainbow about 6AM. Stopped
at the Café for breakfast and then completed the trip home to Otay Mesa. Total trip, 5014 miles. Cost $730 (gas, food and motels)
GRMP
I left on Friday at 3:00 p.m. up the 5 freeway to San Clemente. Spent the night with some
friends. Took off, after getting breakfast at Denny's, up the 5 freeway to the Ortega Highway. Took the 74 going
east over the mountains to Lake Elsimore. Up the 15 north to Chaparral. WOW!! What a store! One and half hours
later...Picked up a rider, then drove up to the local Mc Donald's. I was hungry. Off we all went to the 215 north. North to the 138 for a short
ride. Hang a left onto the 2 highway going west across San Gabriel Wilderness. Nice mountains. About 8000 feet.
I was leading when I noticed that no one was behind me. I missed the turn off for the 2 highway. I made a Wanderers
U-turn. It was on a blind curve, going uphill, traffic was going about 75 mph or more. The wind was blowing about
100 miles an hours, and the snow and the locus, and the snakes, well, maybe not quit that bad. But I did it without
dropping my bike. The guys helped me to learn more about riding the! corners. Lots of information! Try this, do
that, power out of the corners, speed up, slow down going into the corners...My brain is full. At the bottom of
the mountains, we went up the 210 going west. I am not too sure where I spent the night. I think somewhere in San
Fernando. I was tired. I took a shower and went to bed by 9:30 PM No dinner. Too tired. Next morning I was starving,
so off to Denny's again for breakfast. Then down the 210 south, to the 57 south, 5 south. Dropped off Frank in
San Clemente. Then I drove alone down the 5 south to Point Loma and home. Hungry!! I dreamed about motorcycles
on Saturday night. Too much information about bikes. I have no idea how far I rode. But it was a good weekend.
I even patted a Doberman pincher dog. I am very afraid of dogs. The guys even checked to air pressure in my tires.
I told them about the "flashlight" joke.
Rebecca
Eight daring riders (7 bikes) turned out for this one, at least at the beginning. Must have
been that "Peg Scraper" title though in all honesty there really wasn't much of that going on. Oh yeh,
it was quick but we're Wanderers, most on cruisers so it wasn't "that" quick.
Dick did his usual masterful job of planning and then re-planning this ride to account for
first, the ever growing wildfire east of Julian and then a parade in Ramona that pretty much closes off Main Street
for the morning forcing through traffic onto side streets.
Dick, Rebecca, her friend Frank, Ron & Lorn (who took sweeper duty today), Doc, my son
Shane and I gathered at Denny's. With
a big send off from Rod (still healing) and Rose we took Grumpy's "no freeway no way no how" route out
of Kearny Mesa through Poway up Highland Valley Road and back down to Escondido and eventually onto old 395.
Lake Wohlford,
Lilac, West Lilac and Couser Canyon followed and what wonderful motorcycle roads they are. Especially
Couser Canyon which has been pointed out before as having a certain "rhythm" to it. Once you get that rhythm the
road just flows.
We made a stop at Bates Nut Farm where most of us picked up snacks. (it was Franks first time
there; we really have to dream up some sort of initiation for this) Lunch was at "The Oaks" in Rainbow
where who to our wondering eyes should appear but more wandering Wanderers and all their motorcycle gear. Jim &
Evelyn and Michael and Darlene had chosen to take their own rides and we all ended up in Rainbow within half an
hour of each other. Go figure. Rainbow was the official end of ride with Dick reporting 105 miles of motorcycling
on another perfect Southern California day.
Cheers

We can share part of the story. The hyper-linked [photos] take too much space to post on the
website or to attach here. Do see the .pdf file attached to Kent’s List-Serve post for
full route details.
Wrightwood/Idylwild Ride Saturday 08/03 and Sunday 08/04 (other ride references might be:
Where are those glasses? Ooops. Can we get there from here?)
Anticipation is high. It has been months since the germination of the idea for a weekend ride
over the "Los Angeles Crest" (Highway 2), with some explore time in Wrightwood, and a second day with
a peek at the "Rim of The World" (via Highway 138, 18, and 330), with plans to include some hang out
time in Idyllwild (Hwy 243). Friday, each of us has made final checks on machine and gear. Email and phone calls
show 3 bikes confirmed. Mike and Linda on the Valkrye, Michael Wheeley on his hot Kawi KLR-650, and Kent with the
‘Busa. Joe and Cici, Jim and Cheri have been unable to make this one. Bill E. was even tempted. We are to meet
07:am at the 76 station on Rancho Penasquitos and I-15 ready to roll.
Kent musing to self, I'll plan to be there early, get to start point by 06:30. That should
be just fine. Should I try to set an alarm? Nope, won't hear it anyway. Set the mental clock tonight. OK, done.
Might as well look at some of the photos from the Alaska trip. What a vacation... Hmmm,
almost midnight already (Kat your email just came in. Karaoke?
The last Karaoke I heard was the other night in Fairbanks at 'The Pump House'. I heard this guy hollering like
he had caught his foot on a bear trap ;) ;)" [bear] [gramophone]
The day has arrived! Alright! Open
an eye. Look at watch. Watch says 06:28. Damn I'm supposed to be there (3 miles away) in two minutes and 'Busa
needs gas. There is nothing to do but go for it. Scramble, scramble, scramble... arrive ?? minutes late. I wave
to Mike, Linda and Michael who have graciously delayed and pull up to the pump. Bumbling about, I finally figure
out how the pump works, top off and in a groggy state of embarrassment join the rest of the intrepid group. [departure]
Mike and Linda lead us out, Michael follows and just as we near the I-15 South exit I see something like sunglasses
skittering on the roadway. Wonder if Mike tapped them with the edge of a tire? Can't stop now, they are probably
ruined anyway. (Where are those glasses?)
It's cool and overcast with a marine layer. Mike maintains a steady clip, the breeze is great
and the miles melt away. Traveling on I-15 to I-10 to Pasadena freeway (210), the traffic was light and allowed
a smooth route even with the construction. (Ooops. Can we get there from here?) Well done Mike! Fuel bikes, breakfast
stop, regroup (Where
are those glasses?), and by 10:30 or 11:00 the marine layer has broken and we're headed out of Pasadena and up
the grade. Traffic is light. About 60 miles of great road, great weather, great scenery and views, and great company,
what a ride. This is worth it all and more. [crest-1] [crest-2] [crest-3]
We swung off to explore the Chilao Campground and picnic area [chilao-1] [chilao-2] [chilao-3]
[chilao-4] [chilao-5],
an interesting visitor center [pic-1] [pic-2] and tried to locate the bikers memorial grove (Where are those glasses?).
The breeze whispering through the pines was interrupted by a U.S. Forest Service fire truck that went past us on
the narrow campground road with lights flashing and siren screaming, we still don't know why or to where. Exit
campground, turn east and go up the road a few hundred yards to Newcomb's Ranch for some sippin', loafin', and
lookin'. (Where are those glasses?)
Departing Newcombs and heading east for Wrightwood are miles of great sweepers and some stupendous
views of the Mojave. One long left-hander has a rider lying down in the shade on the south (right) side of the
road. His head is propped on the saddle of his new pearl colored R6 Yamaha which lies broken near the edge of the
north-side road bank. My estimate of the scene and black skid marks indicate a hi-side at about 70 mph. The rider
had been there over an hour. A medic had cleaned a break in the skin at the left rear lower part of the skull and
bandaged a scraped and torqued right thumb. The Joe Rocket Ballistic jacket, gloves, and Arai helmet did their
job. We helped lift/load the broken bike in his buddy’s pickup that arrived shortly after we stopped.
We continued on to arrive in Wrightwood about 13:00. Mike and Linda chose to hang out and
explore the scene at Wrightwood. Michael and I chose to head west on Hwy N4 Big Pines Hwy to explore “The Devils
Punchbowl” located about 32 miles away. That State Park area is an interesting formation made by the intersection
of two major earthquake fault lines. Upthrust sedimentary rock and a huge, rocky bowl like depression (estimated
1/3 mile long and 1/8 to ¼ mile wide and maybe 350 feet deep) made for impressive sights. There is a visitor
center, picnic area, and a mile long self-guided tour trail. Michael and I scouted the location of a geo-cache
but did not make the hike to find it. [punchbowl-1] [punchbowl-2] [punchbowl-3] (yes those are people in the center
of the last photo!!!)
The return trip to Wrightwood again allowed us the pleasure of some twisties on a well maintained
road. There was another geo-cache located near the ranger station at the intersection of Hwy 2 and Hwy N4 at Big
Pines just outside Wrightwood so we spent some time searching for it. There is a small ski area and campground
at the top of the mesa there. At one point off a fire road the cache location was indicated 0.07 miles away down
a steep hill strewn with pine needles. Neither of us opted for the climb so we circled to find another road. The
second road was barricaded so we stopped. Indication was 0.13 miles up a seep slope. Michael opted a direct route,
I opted a circuitous path. When the GPS indicates the location coordinates the accuracy is a radius of plus or
minus maybe 30 feet. Imagine a treasure hunt where you are looking for something. You don’t know exactly what it
is only that it looks ‘different’. Typically it is something like a jar, Tupperware container or a can that can
keep a weatherproof log book. Michael
is an experienced cacher and he had the patience to let me make a first listed geo-cache find (can you see it hidden
in the photo behind the GPS??!. [geo-cache] We left a $1 bill with a reference to http://wheresgeorge.com.
We definitely need to set up a Wanderers GPS cache find bike ride sometime.
It was probably 18:30 or so when we got back to Wrightwood and went searching for Mike and
Linda somewhere in the “Mountain View” complex. They had scouted the town and found a place for dinner and breakfast
the next morning. So we get collected (Where are those glasses?) and head off to dinner at the “Blue Ridge?”. A
fine dinner in the patio it was. The steak, scallops, Malaysian shrimp and trimmings would grace the plate of San
Diego’s finest dining places. The service was good. With “Wanderers” as company at the table, this as good as it
gets. Highly recommended. By now it’s 8pm or so and time to see if any motel will offer a discount for the night.
“The Pines” had one room in half of a duplex cabin not reserved with a twin and two single beds for $55. The manager
showed us the place and was convinced that at this hour it would likely go unoccupied unless we stayed there at
a discounted price. Rebecca where were you? We all could have had a bed ‘out of the cold night air’ for only $15
each. [photo] As we are unloading the bikes and getting ready to settle in, Michael sat on one of the singles,
which promptly collapsed and crashed to the floor. [photo] After that there were ‘thumps and bumps in the night
= young kids running about in the adjacent unit’ till about 10:pm. Ask Michael W., he can tell you more of the
‘ambiance’ of this establishment.
We all met at the Pine Manor Coffee Shop by 8am and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast before heading
out to Mormon Rocks, [photo] Lake Silverwood, and Crestline. Hwy 138 east of I-15 suffered a burn of the chaparral
since last winter but the curves through the badlands were as good as ever. Lake Silverwood had a number of morning
jet skiers and boaters skittering about. Our ride to Crestline was in twisties (watch for sand on a few cuts) like
Mesa Grande with big pine timber alongside the road. I had given warning of a propensity to get directionally challenged
in Crestline. Sure enough I missed a left turn and we found ourselves on Hwy 18 bound for San Bernadino / Riverside. Feigning a photo op we stopped
to enjoy the view [photo] [photo] [photo].After the ‘u-turn’ back uphill to Crestline we wandered through cabins
along the twisty, wooded way and finally came out at the “Cliff Hanger” near the Lake Arrowhead cutoff. (map) (Ooops.
Can we get there from here?)
A leisurely pace to the 76 Station in Running Springs for gas and stretch (10:am) stop gave
many vistas over the mountains. Hwy 330 drops from 6000’ to 2000’ in less than 10 miles and the temperature rises
all the way down. Hwy 330 to Hwy 30 to I-10 East (Ooops. Can we get there from here?), Almost lost Mike and Linda
on that one because I didn’t get in the left lanes soon enough. We ride on the freeways to the Hwy 243 exit in
Banning. The Valkrie exits for a chance to shed some gear before Mike heads us up the hill to Idyllwild. (Hey Mike
you are in charge of your own ‘peg scraping’ this time). There is a little traffic, no wind, and great weather
as it cools off rising out of the desert. More miles of fine road, terrific scenery, nice curves until we take
a walk at Vista Point. (Where are those glasses?) How
did we arrive in Idyllwild [photo] at lunchtime just in time for a BBQ at Joannes? See Wanderers Idyllwild Ride.
Another nice lunch even if the BBQ would not offer chicken served ‘dark meat only’ nor meat
from all the same chicken. We took some photos (Where are those glasses?) and decided to take divergent routes.
Mike and Linda plan to take Hwy 72 west to Paradise Café then head for home. Cell phones are on, Mike will
call when they get home. Michael and I are to suffer the heat in Hemet for the pleasure of the curves and the view
on Hwy 72 heading west to get there. As we start out Michael suffers my abrupt turn into the Texaco at Idyllwild
($2.40 for hi-pop) but to para-phrase Gary
S.: ‘Never pass a perfectly good gas station.’ The
ride to Hemet is superb; the curves are fine, the road is in good shape, the view is grand. We pull into the newly
refurbished Shell Station on the east end of Florida Street and top off. I re-soaked the head bandana and tried
to get re-collected. (Where are those glasses?) Michael again demonstrated his patience. We’re finally off again.
The plan is to bypass the ‘main drag’ in Hemet by turning south (left at Stop light at 4th and Florida Streets)
then east on Stetson till turning south again on State Street to go on R-3 to Sage. It worked perfectly.
(Where are those glasses? Can we get there from here?),
At Sage a stop to re-hydrate and a decision to proceed south to Hwy-79 as opposed to a turn
east to end up on Rancho California in Temecula winery country. Good News, the R-3 construction is done for this
year. New surfacing from Wilson Valley Rd to “Miss Kittys” at Hwy-79. So we ride another nice stretch of curves.
We proceeded west on Hwy-79, turned south on Redhawk Parkway and continued on Lone Wolf Drive
to hit Pala road at Pechanga. Hey, that shortcut worked too. Michael and I stopped to admire from a distance the
“Great Oak” which is rumored to be over 800 years old and perhaps the oldest living oak tree in California. We pulled onto Pala Road after
a string of traffic and about the time we hit the first curves I notice another cycle behind Michael. We just hang
in there behind the cages. Looking in the mirrors, that sure looks like Mike and Linda on the Valkrie. Hmmm, what
are chances of that happening? They went through Paradise Corner?? (Where are those glasses?) Sure enough, at the
stop sign in Pala the Valkrie pulls along side and I motion for them to come with us. Mike shakes his head and
turns left for home.
Michael and I are in the traffic on 76 headed for I-5 so we turn off on Couser Canyon and
then West Lilac (the other Wanderers can’t have had all the fun). West Lilac had loose pea gravel last week, so
we take it easy. This week whoa, stop. New oil surfacing. Stop, scuff boot on surface. It’s dry. Is it slick? Test
it: accelerate and stop quickly. Hey this is good surface but be wary, it’s new maintenance work. We kept a safe and sane pace
to I-15 and got on the slab. Michael exited at Escondido, I continued south to apartment in Mira Mesa.
What a fine group to ride with! What a weekend!
Mike C. called from home about 6:pm to say they arrived safely. Thank you Mike.
Michael W. has plotted the run to share, 473 miles of awesome riding and scenery. Thank you
Michael.
We've been giving residents and emergency vehicles in Julian wide berth for the past couple
of weeks. Although
the fire has not subsided significantly, Julian no longer in imminent danger.
We took a ride from Ramona to Julian at noon today. Except
for a big "S2 Closed" sign, and Highway Patrol vehicles blocking Wynola Road, you wouldn't know anything
had happened. You
can't see any damage, and Julian is roaring back to life after the scare.
The roads were just like they usually are at noon. Some
trucks, some zonies looking for pizza, a couple of horse trailers, and about 200 motorcycles.
Curiously, we DID pass no less than two CHP speed traps (patrol cars with radar units sticking
out the windows, pulled up into the bushes). Go
figure.

Ok Wanderers, we've had a little change of plan...It's a change for the better but it requires your RSVP absolutely, positively today!!!!!!
Here's the deal. Grumpy
and I rode to Ramona yesterday and took a look at the park where we'd planned to hold our barbeque picnic.
Big problem,
no open flame is allowed not no way, not no how.
Fortunately about the time we were thinking this could be a bad thing an e-mail was being
sent from the So Cal Cruisers (our sister club.) suggesting we join their club picnic in Santee....A pig roast!
Woo Hoo,
DONE!
The date is the same, the time is changed. The pig and fixin's will be served about 2 pm. The
Cruisers are making a day of it with an 8 hour ride. Ours
will likely be a little shorter (ya think?). Details for our ride will be posted soon.
Children are invited, encouraged even. The
Cruisers are asking for a donation of $10 per adult to defray expenses. We're not being asked to bring anything else. The address (a map will be posted later today on the website) is 10611 Palm Row Dr. in Santee.
Again, they really really really need to know who's planning to attend no later than this
evening.
Please respond
to this message or phone me directly 619-440-2644 if you will be attending and haven't RSVP'd for the previous
location.
Thanks a bunch all
John
Q.
This is one direct route to Judys house. The
Wanderers could
also use it but from the opposite direction. Once they got to 52 east from the north bound I-15, the directions
would be the same. For those coming from the Riverside, San Bernardino and Temecula area, the best bet is south
I-15.
From Orange County-
Go South on I-5 to South I-805
Exit I-805 on 52 East
Exit 52 E on Mission Gorge Road. Go left on Mission Gorge Road.
You will drive through Santee. Note after you clear Santee, Mission Gorge Road becomes Woodside
Ave.
Continue on Woodside Ave and stay to the left and make your stop at the sign. (Do not follow
curve to the right). You will come to Riverford Drive. (approx.
1 mile after stop sign)
Turn left onto Riverford Drive.
Turn right onto Riverside Drive.
Turn left onto Palm Row Drive. Stay right on Palm Row Drive. (Do not curve to the left.)
10611 Palm Row Dr. on right side of road.
Ø Telephone #: 619/561-0949
This is not an official club ride but John Del Santo has asked that all members be made aware.
A poker run is scheduled for August 11th (Sunday) to benefit the family of Ramona (Mojo) Guerrera,
a member of ABATE and "WomenMoto.com" who was killed by a hit and run driver recently while riding her
bicycle.
Entry is
$10 and all proceeds go to the victims family.
The ride begins at the "Spice House Cafe" on Clairemont Mesa Blvd, directly across
the street from the municipal courthouse. (just east of our usual meeting spot at Dennys) second
stop is "Del Dios Country Store", third
stop "The Hideout", 4th
stop "Flynn Springs Inn and the run ends at "The Flame" nightclub in Hillcrest.
Best hand
wins $100, worst hand a Harley Davidson leather chain wallet.
John and Fran DelSanto will be working one of the poker stops and would enjoy seeing as many
of us as possible.
Thanks,
John

Regards, Gary Steinweg, Wanderers Treasurer
The new shipment
of silver club pins has arrived
so we have
them available for sale again. $5 each. The small patches are also available $5 each and we now have several large patches @ $25. (same great patch, same great
price...for now)
The pins and small patches will be available at club rides and meetings.
For large patches I need a heads up so I know to bring one on rides. Please
make all checks payable to club Treasurer Gary Steinweg.
Reminder: each
club member gets one free silver pin with their 2002 membership. Be sure and ask for yours on a ride or at a meeting if you haven't received one.
Cheers
John
Q.
I am in a quandary here. As
the master of the Wanderers ListServ, I am also the one who normally gets the complaints on issues originating
on the system. This
week has been a perfect example:
I have been asked in the last week, by three separate members of the club, to be unsubscribed
from the Wanderers ListServ. Up
to this point, there were also 5 other members who declined to be subscribed to the list - all state the exact
same reason.
The reason is the amount of non-motorcycle related traffic the list generates. We had a discussion on this a
few weeks ago that I think never came to a consensus. I
would like John Q to set up a club web poll that will set this issue to rest once and for all - then, whatever
the outcome, results should be published on the website as the "Theme of the ListServ".
Basically, I see we have two options:
(Option 1) A motorcycle discussion forum - traffic is limited to official club information
(rides, meetings, what's new on the website, ride reports, etc). The
forum can also be used to have motorcycle related discussions (best oil, where can I find this part, my bike has
a wobble at 45mph, etc). Other
than this, no idle banter is allowed.
(Option 2) A social club for the Wanderers - traffic is not limited in any way. The theme is a email service
that allows the members to socialize with each other at their whim. No
profanity, personal insults, etc, but other than that, no real rules to the subject matter of the posts.
I do not support the creation of 2 Listservs, one for each option. This
poses too much admin hassles dealing with cross posting, double posting, etc - I have tried this in other arenas
and it never works. I
am also not going to publish my opinion on the subject here.

We have decided at this mornings monthly Wanderers meeting (based on poll results from the
"Wanderers Web" & discussions) to try the following concerning the "List-Serve":
1) The ListServe will be used as it was intended in the first place, a
Very Low Traffic, Club News & Ride Related Only. When
posting to the List, ask yourself "Does everyone NEED to know this?" If not, then it should either get
emailed directly to the person(s) you need to communicate with, or
post it on the forum. When
"replying" to a posting to the List, ask the same question "Does everyone need to see my reply,
or only the person posting the original question.
2) I have setup a forum on Delphi, and encourage members to check it out and use it. It is
a web based forum that you log onto like any other website. Topics would be presented for discussion ranging from
"General" which is open season to whatever topics members want from jokes to best soda fountains, great
vendors to politics.
The site is: http://forums.delphiforums.com/SDWanderers/start
If you are not a Delphi Forum member already, register, then look around the site I made.
Top left hand corner has a few of the most recent discussions. You can click on one to go directly to it, or just
click on Start Reading to get to all message. The
messages in here are ones that I threw in to show how it can work, and some examples. Feel free to post any and
all messages, and the only monitoring that we ask is to hold the swearing down.
Thanks
Greg
