WANDERERS GENERAL MEETING
May 25, 2002
Country Choice Restaurant

ATTENDING: Greg, Seanna & Gregory (a future Wanderer in his own right?) Huber; Kent Saxon; Joe Baker; Barry Borden; P.A. Davis; Al Sessler; "Bronco" Bill Edwards; Thomas "Doc" Cassidy; Joe Durham; Dick "Grumpy" Usested; John Q. "Webdude" Lawrence; Quintin Bradley; Ron "Taz" Growel; Tera Salo; Rod & Rose Fleming; and NEW MEMBERS, Kat Malasky, Aaron Addison, and Mike & Darlene MacDonell.
Meeting called to order by Rod Fleming at 10:01 AM. (immediately followed by a motion to adjourn. Motion was denied, as we still had some stuff to talk about, and we didn't want to disappoint all the new people attending.)

MINUTES: Doc moved that the minutes be accepted as posted to the Website; Greg seconded. Minutes approved.

TREASURER'S REPORT: Neither Gary nor his effigy showed up, so the treasury report was as follows: We have$1,033.95. Having already posted his report to the list, John Q. moved that the treasury report be approved; Doc seconded, and the motion passed.

OLD BUSINESS: The price for the large patches was deemed to be too great for the current treasury to support. Kat volunteered to contact "Custom Logos" for their bid. Meanwhile, the order for the small patches was approved as follows: An order will be placed for 100 3" patches (upon quality approval) at a cost of $3.55, which will be sold for $6.00, with the excess money going back into the Patch Account. Motion to that effect was made by Rod, seconded by John Q., and passed unanimously. Discussion of large patches was tabled for the time being.

TOY RUN: Ron Growel reported on the last meeting of the Toy Run Committee. Pauma Casino will be providing the stage for the band, electrical outlets, and food from 11-3 PM. Campsites are available. There will be a booth at the casino selling the Toy Run 2002 tee shirts. The official radio station will be 103.7 FM. The next committee meeting will be held June 23 at 10 AM. It will start at South Shores, and the various routes will be pre-ridden (as handy an excuse for a ride as I've ever seen).

NEW BUSINESS: It was proposed that there be a "Secret" website accessible only to Wanderers. The purpose is publication of information useful to individual members, such as announcing that you are a mechanic, or an electrician, or a carpenter etc., willing to provide assistance--emergency or otherwise--to other members. This information would not be accessible to people outside of the club. John Q. will provide the appropriate button and will also reveal the password at a later date (like probably tonight). Contact him with your resume if you are willing to participate.

RIDES: The following rides are either on the website or are new proposals. Details will be posted as they come in.
May 26 Puerto Nueva Ride (Kat's ride-you go girl!)
May 27 Impromptu Memorial Day Ride
June 1 Blessing of the Bikes Ceremony/Ride
June 2 Rob & Maureen's Marathon Cheer-on Ride
June 9 Blue Knights Charity Run
June 22 Wolf Run* (after meeting)
June 29 Ride for Kids
July 6 Anti-Destination Ride
July 13 Ride to Chaparral
August ? Joe's Big Bear Weekend Ride

* This run is open to all members, but only a limited number will be allowed to go into the wolf preserve, and advance reservations must be made. Contact Greg to RSVP.
Motion to adjourn was made by Greg, seconded by John Q., and everyone agreed.
Meeting adjourned at 10:41.

Respectfully submitted,
Rose Fleming
Secretary

Good Post Meeting Ride

Thanks to Joe Durham for taking us on our best post meeting ride ever!
Following the meeting those who wanted to ride followed Joe to Rancho San Diego where a group of Southern Cruisers were waiting. There seems to be just a bit less gray hair among that group but their assortment of bikes is similar to ours. Vulcans, Road Stars, Hondas. They have an interesting ride format too (or maybe it was just today but it worked well).
Everyone rode out to Barrett Junction together on 94 but then, during a stop, the "fast" riders were told to "go for it." That allowed those who enjoy the peg scraping and need a bit more "pucker" time than the rest of us to get their jollies while the remainder (about a dozen bikes) took a more normal Wanderer style ride. The fast guys were waiting on old highway 80 for us and everyone took on Kitchen Creek together.
Kitchen Creek has been paved! Fortunately not all of it so there's still that bit of 'character' but several miles of formerly potholed road off of Sunrise is now new pavement. Oh, but not great pavement. They seem to have laid the blacktop right over the big rocks in the middle of the road so there could still be some surprises.
From Kitchen Creek to Sunrise highway went the group of 16 stopping at an overlook many of us had never seen before. Those who have, it includes a sizeable satellite dish with a cover that looks a bit like a gigantic golf ball.
From there we rode into Julian where many riders stopped at the Wrongbranch. Those of us still pretty full from breakfast continued down to Julian Apple Pie Company for some desert then home.
Huge thanks to Joe for the ride and an major atta boy to Quintin Bradley who (if we had such a thing) would definitely be in line for the Wanderers "Most Improved Rider" award. The man was stylin today!!
Cheers
John Q.

New Wanderers

From Michael & Darlene MacDonell
Thanks for the warm welcome! I got the opportunity to meet a bunch of youfolks at Packards in Ramona last week. You were very good ambassadors. Darlene and I went home and filled out membership applications the next morning.

Brief Bio:
I started riding when I was 16 but that ended with Viet Nam. I spent a year and a half there, about half of the time as an artillery forward observer with E Company 3Bn 60th Inf, which was a part of the joint Army-Navy "Mobile Riverine Force" operating from the Mekong River. Once back home, in between large stretches of relative vagrancy, I met Darlene and we decided to get an education. I ended up with a Ph. D. in Microbiology. After working at a couple of biotech companies in the San Diego area, we decided to open our own small business in Ramona, chemically synthesizing DNA primers for research (cancer, AIDS, genetic defects) and forensic applications (DNA fingerprinting, etc.). Still hadn't returned to motorcycles until two important events happened.
First, the re-birth (in a manner of speaking) of the Indian Motorcycle Company got me thinking about how I had always wanted to own a 1940's era Indian Chief. Second, a bout with cancer (I won the first round, but lost a kidney) reminded me how fleeting life is, and how there might not be enough of it left to do all those things that were put aside for "someday".
I've been back riding for a little more than a year, met you folks, and now I'm sitting in front of the computer. Fifty five years in 275 words or less.
I'll be looking forward to riding with you folks this summer.
Best Regards,
Mike

Webmasters Notes:

Hey Gang,
We have a new (and long overdue) page on the club website. You'll find the button for it on the bottom row of the main page menu titled "Honors & Awards". A special plaque honors our club Presidents past and current. Certificates of appreciation are also posted from the San Diego Toy Run Committee.

Another new and sort of fun has been added to the club website.
Thanks to a bit of creative Javascript supplied by Bobbie Presten your club miles will now be automatically totaled for you when you check the boxes next to rides. "Check" it out by visiting the club website www.sdwanderers.org then click on either "Upcoming Rides" or "Past Rides" and then on "Track Your Mileage" (next to the spinning odometer which coincidentally stops occasionally at 3000 miles. Karma? or Software?). Keeping track will be simpler if you print the page each time you ride with the club. If you've been on every ride since last months meeting (and several members are really close to that) you'll find you're already more than half way to the gold pin. Easy huh?
Cheers

Ride Reports

Hello Rob & Maureen, Goodbye Grumpy
What a great day! I'll let someone else write this one up but wanted to be sure and thank Doc and Chris for their ministrations this morning.
Huge thanks to Wanderers and guests too. We passed the helmet during the ceremony and collected an even $100 for thechildren of St. Vincent De Paul which will be turned over to the toy run committee.
I think we're all agreed, this should turn into an annual event for the Wanderers.
Cheers and thanks
John Q.

Obviously this isn't an early crowd! <grins>

Rod Fleming, Mike Calderone, Kent Saxton and I made it to Balboa Park this morning to wish Rob and Maureen Matias well on their 26 mile run. Getting there proved to be half the fun. The SDPD had so many streets (and 1 freeway) blocked off that even they didn't seem to know exactly how to get from point A to point B. Rod and I had scouted this all out ya know. We knew "precisely" how we were going to do this. So much for best laid plans. With the 163 closed we found our planned route to the zoo blocked. We got off the I-5 at 6th instead...Whoo Whee, look at all the people! We turned, went downtown, figured we'd cut across and back up the hill. Nope. All the two lane streets were blocked. Heck some of the one way streets were blocked! Eventually we found a way to Zoo Place as planned and waddya know. The Zoo parking lot is no-mans land. It's blocked to traffic. Time for plan "C" we parked across from the Zoo and in timely fashion too.
Mike pulled in right behind us. He'd found a creative route as well. We stayed put since we were parked very close to the run route and eventually along came our Wanderers Rob and Maureen, huffing and puffing just a bit but still smiling. Shoot, they'd have been carting me off in an ambulance! The intrepid duo had seen Kent on the other side of the park. Another Wanderer who wasn't going to let a few (zillion) cones, one way and do not enter signs deter him.
From Balboa park it was an easy trip to Kearny Mesa where the four of us met up with Dick (Grumpy) Useted, Joe Baker and Joe Durham. Now the sun is really up and the day is getting pretty. After pumping some life giving fluids into our bodies (Juan Valdez made some bucks this morning) we headed out the I-15, destination, Rainbow. It was an uneventful journey except for the nice lady who, stuck in the far right lane, very nicely allowed our six bike column to pass before pulling left into our lane. Did I say six? yes, she seems to have missed Rod (#7) in her mirror and quicker than he could say "wham bam what the hell are you doing maam" she was in his lane and he was on the binders. All in all this hasn't been a good week for Rod.
Following breakfast and goodbyes to Dick who's safely Michigan bound our group, smaller by one, took highway 76 home. What a terrific day for a relaxing cruise on that highway which hundreds of other riders obviously agreed with. Our left arms got tired of waving.
If you're ever up with nothing to do at four or five on a Sunday morning, take a little cruise downtown. The Embarcadero is especially pretty. Just be sure you've gassed up Saturday because fuel is a scarce commodity at that hour. Trust me on that one.
Cheers
John Q.

Upcoming

14th Annual Blue Knights Benefit Ride
When: Sunday, June 9
Time: 7:45AM
Where: Denny's Restaurant, SR 163 and Clairemont Mesa
Registration Fee: Singles $20.00 Two-up: $25.00
For the fifth consecutive year, the Wanderers will participate in the Blue Knights Annual Benefit Ride. Many of you may already know that members of the Blue Knights are engaged in law enforcement occupations and a portion of the proceeds from this event are donated to "The Center for Child Protection, Children's Hospital."
We will meet at Denny's and ride as a group to Cycle Parts West at the intersection of El Cajon Blvd and the 805 Fwy.
Registration begins at 8:00AM, and we need to arrive early to claim ride pins for those who have not already pre-registered.
We will plan on leaving Cycle Parts West as a group at 9:00AM after we've had our free coffee and doughnuts, and a chance to look over the goodies in the store.
Following the ride, your registration fee buys you a spaghetti dinner at the SDPD Pistol Range Clubhouse, where door prizes and a 50/25/25 drawing are awarded. (Don Presten usually cleans up on the door prizes...I usually clean up on the spaghetti)
I'd like to encourage all Wanderers to participate in this worthy event. For additional information, visit our website and click on the link for the registration form. It is past the deadline for pre-registration, but filling out the form in advance may save some time at the registration table.
NOTE: Some members of our sister club, the SoCal Cruisers from up north will be joining us. As this will make for a rather large group, please DO NOT invite any other clubs to join with the Wanderers on this ride.
Hope to see you all there.

Ron
